Roots & Foundation

The first module in our 200 hour program will be devoted to what we believe is the foundation of your career as a yoga teacher – your personal practice. Therefore we will work on alignment in poses, the History of Yoga, and personal growth and inner reflection. Many opportunities will be provided to discover what you truly value in life and how you relate to the world, so that you can teach from an authentic place of self-knowledge. We will touch on the beginnings of how to teach a class, sequencing basics, and practice teaching each other as well as work in depth on cueing, alignment and basic shapes of the poses. The module will culminate with your first practice session teaching the general public.
The Art of Teaching Yoga
The second module in our 200 hour program will focus on the nuts and bolts of teaching a class including but not limited to advanced sequencing, teaching beginners, teaching pregnant students, creating sacred space in the classroom, teaching privates, the business of yoga and more. We will also study deeper the Tantric roots of Yoga and some Tantric meditation practices including Chakra meditation, mudra and mantra. Ayurvedic lifestyle practices and theory will be discussed.
Both modules are required to receive your RYT 200. You may take modules individually for personal growth and development. Please consider this 200 hour program an Introduction to the topics listed. 200 hours is nowhere near enough time to fully teach anyone the complexities of the yoga tradition. It is merely the beginning of your yoga journey and will give you the basic tools to develop your own home practice and to begin to teach basic classes from a place of heart.
Hot Springs Yoga Retreat
Your training will culminate in a rejuvenative and educational hot springs retreat in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. You will be responsible for lodging and meals. The price of the yoga during this retreat is included in your tuition. Sixteen hours of training spread out over the course of three days will include whatever topics which there was great interest in, as well as any topics we did not see through to completion. This usually includes asana lab and alignment and some other hands on teaching methodology topics. Graduation and celebration! Tentative Dates March 31- April 3, 2017

Philosophy of Program and Orientation
Our aim in this program is to give you the tools and opportunities to experience transformation and personal growth within yourself. The study of yoga is endless. Hopefully you will be studying it from now until the rest of your life. 200 hours is only the tip of the iceberg and we don’t intend to try and squeeze everything in here or teach you every single pose or every piece of information. We stress quality over quantity. We intend to give you a strong foundation, a platform upon which you build your practice of yoga. By giving you a thorough experience of yoga, the cultivation of your personal practice will naturally bloom.
We absolutely teach you a strong anatomical foundation. Shiva has been a licensed massage therapist since 2004 and a registered massage teacher since 2008. She has owned a massage school and was formally trained in Structural Integration (similar to myofascial release.) However anatomy will not be the focus of this 200 hour training. Anatomy will be used as a vehicle for understanding proper alignment and safety, insofar as it serves your personal practice.
What makes this training different?
We structure our program so that you have ample opportunity for self reflection and growth. This usually includes change, and during change some people experience “growing pains.” Even good change can sometimes feel uncomfortable when we are treading into new territory. Some students find that a few of the exercises we do in class can be extremely transformative. Because of this we recommend that you have support outside of the training to help you process some of the content that may arise during the course of our self-inquiry and self-investigation. For some people, a trusted and close friend is enough. Others may choose to have the option of counseling or therapy to help them process through this material. Shiva is also available at any between classes or after class if you need to speak one-on-one with her for support. While this training is not specifically targeted towards enlightenment, it is a topic we discuss and the following quote points towards something important:

Yoga Teacher Training: Destination Within!
This 200 hour yoga teacher training will immerse you in the study and practice of yoga as well as give you the tools to lead others into the experience of yoga.
What is Yoga?
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TEACH YOGA?
Teaching is not about saying spiritually inspirational or profound things in your classes. It’s not about appearing smart or yogi-like. It’s not even about leading your students through a well balanced physical practice, although if you’re a good teacher, all of those things will probably happen in your classes. Teaching yoga is about creating a sacred space in your classroom and in your heart in order to be able to facilitate the experience of “yoga” in your students. While ultimately this experience of yoga is unitive consciousness or dharana “meditative awareness,” for beginning students it may simply mean being aware of their body and breath while they practice asana, or yoga poses.
Teaching yoga also means being aware of your body and your students’ bodies in the most detailed way possible — first and foremost to keep them safe, and secondly to help them progress in the poses. In today’s modern world many people come to yoga to get a workout or to heal their body and these are good reasons to practice yoga. AND as yoga teachers we want to always be ready for that moment when awareness dawns and use guiding language (or know enough to leave them alone) to always hint that our self is not a mind, a body, and a heart, all separate. We are a mind-body-heart, a being from which you cannot separate each part.
As a teacher, always know that when you are helping a student get into a deeper backbend and open their heart, there is always an emotional/spiritual correlate happening at the same time.

Homework is a big part of our program. We have 53 hours of homework (aka non-contact hours) built into our Certification Program that you will receive credit for on your certificate and that are required for graduation. During the time between your attendance at part 1 and part 2 you will be required to practice teach, establish a home practice, keep a practice journal, and do some reading. Please plan to give daily attention to Yoga during your 4 month break. This large amount of homework is assigned in order to help you establish a daily focus on the practice and study of yoga. This is essential whether your goal is to become an amazing yoga teacher or if you simply want to enhance your personal practice. A daily dedication to the practice will benefit your life on all levels.
You can also have as much time as needed after the second module to complete your homework. There is no rush and there are not hard and fast deadlines. Your certificate is issued once you have completed all graduation requirements, including homework.
